Generations Optometry Clinic

About our Eye Care Clinic in West Vancouver, BC

About

Our History

More Than 75 Years of Trusted Eye Care

Generations Optometry was founded in 1950 by Drs. Bert and Daphne Jervis. Originally located on the north side of Park Royal Mall, the clinic quickly became a trusted part of the West Vancouver community. In 1960, the practice moved to the Clyde Medical Dental Building, where the Jervises continued to care for families across generations for decades.

Dr. Bert Jervis practiced optometry in West Vancouver for over fifty years. Beyond patient care, he was deeply committed to the advancement of the profession itself. He served as President of the British Columbia Optometric Association (today known as “BC Doctors of Optometry - BCDO”) and advocated for expanded diagnostic privileges and procedures that continue to shape modern optometric care today. He taught at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and worked in a variety of clinical settings including Shaughnessy Hospital and the Pender Island Health Centre. His passion for preserving the profession’s history led him to compile the British Columbia section of the History of Optometry in Canada. Dr. Daphne Jervis graduated from the Los Angeles College of Optometry, following in the footsteps of her father to become an optometrist. Together, Bert and Daphne built a practice known not only for clinical excellence, but for genuine relationships with their patients and community.

In 1991, Dr. Bess Lu purchased the practice after graduating from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. Following her residency at the Vision Institute of Toronto, she returned home to Vancouver to continue the clinic’s legacy of full-scope family eye care.

Like the doctors before her, Dr. Lu has always believed that caring for patients also means contributing to the future of the profession. Early in her career, she served as Chairperson of the Greater Vancouver Optometric Society, acted as a mediator for the British Columbia Optometric Association, and later became involved as an examiner for the Canadian national board examinations.

Under Dr. Lu’s leadership, the clinic moved to its current location at 100 Park Royal in 1994, where it continues to serve patients today.

For over 75 years, our clinic has remained proudly independent and rooted in the belief that optometry is about far more than routine eye exams. It is about protecting vision, embracing advances in medical eye care, advocating for the profession, and building lifelong relationships with the families who trust us with their care.

The name “Generations” reflects not only the families we have cared for over decades, but also the generations of doctors who have dedicated themselves to keeping optometry progressive, compassionate, and deeply connected to the community. That tradition continues today, and we are proud to carry it forward for generations to come.
